GST Rates on Toys and Sports Goods

GST regime was rolled out in the year 2017 with the approach of “ One Nation One Tax “.GST rates are fixed on the basis of Harmonised System Nomenclature or HSN, which was invented by the World Customs Organization (WCO) with the objective of classifying goods in a structured fashion at an international font.

In India the GST rate for all products are fixed and classified under five tax rate slabs – 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. The toys and sporting goods fall under the category of 12% or 18% or 28% GST rate. Let’s have a deeper dive in the GST rates on toys and sports goods.

GST Rates on Toys

GST on toys mainly come under the three GST tax rate slabs which are 12 %, 18% and 28%.

Under GST Toys like tricycles, scooters, pedal cars excluding the electronic toys are taxed at 12% while the electronic toys including tricycles, scooters, pedal cars (electronics) are taxed at 18% GST.

The 28% GST rate is applicable to video games and its consoles. This category also includes festive, carnival or other entertainment articles, including conjuring tricks and novelty jokes.

Note: When the toy does not come under any of the above categories, then it would fall under the category of 28% GST rate by default.

GST Rates on Sporting Goods

GST on sports goods are taxed at 5% GST but it excludes the articles and types of equipment for general physical exercise. In addition to the sports goods, the category of 5% GST also includes fishing rods, fishing hooks, and other line fishing tackle or fish landing nets.

Note: The sporting goods which do not fall under any of the above categories, would be taxed at 28% by default.

GST Rate for Exercise Equipment

Articles and equipment for general physical exercise, gymnastics, athletics, other sports (including table-tennis) or outdoor games (not mentioned elsewhere); swimming pools and paddling pools are taxed at 28% GST.

Note: The exercise equipment which does not fall under any of the above mentioned categories, then it would be taxed at 28% by default.

GST Rate for Swings and Amusement Park Equipment

28% GST rate has been fixed for roundabouts, swings, shooting galleries and other fairground amusements.

Note: The park equipment which does not fall under any of the above categories, then it would fall under the category of 28% by default.
